Paul Weller In Aberdeen - Gig Review!

The Modfather Delights Audience!
Paul Weller Cements Reputation As One Of UK’s Finest.

Published: 14/11/2008

NATIONAL treasure, the Modfather and the man who sensationally disbanded The Jam when they were seemingly at the peak of their powers.

Paul Weller’s three-decade career in the music business means he is different things to different generations.

The fortysomethings in last night’s audience at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre’s Press and Journal Arena still remember him as the archetypal young man from the post-punk era of Going Underground and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.

For the Britpop generation he remains a patron of the chief torch-bearers of the nation’s return to its love affair with guitar music, Oasis and the brothers Gallagher.

Even the youngsters have to admit that this time Dad’s right, Weller has penned some cracking tunes over the years.

Now nearing 50 and revered as one of the finest songsmiths the UK has ever produced, Weller has experienced several peaks and troughs on the critical acclaim front. But new album 22 Dreams – his ninth solo effort – has been hailed as distinctive and one of the best efforts of his career.

But as ever, on these sorts of nights, it was the familiar favourites which proved to be the biggest crowd-pleasers.

A double encore featured the That’s Entertainment and the grand finale was a roof-raising Town Called Malice.

  1. Fantastic gig! The Eton Rifles was the highlight of the night, I was quick enough to get in eyesight of Paul, about 4 meters distance away for the concert. Paul Weller, I salute you!

Paul Weller On John Lydon!

PAUL WELLER has urged fellow Brit JOHN LYDON to stop clinging to the past - because the punk icon has become the "antithesis" of JOHNNY ROTTEN. The Jam founder admits he shudders every time he sees Lydon on reality TV shows or hears of another planned Sex Pistols reunion. And he has two simple words of advice for the punk star: "Leave it." Weller says, "I don't really understand him anymore. He's become the antithesis of what he once was. Does he need the money? "Perhaps he misses the adulation, the buzz. Nostalgia has become a whole industry in itself... and I don't like it. You can never recapture what has gone." Paul Weller And John Lydon At The Mojo Awards
