Paul Weller — Sands Centre, Carlisle - Review!

Paul Weller at the Sands Centre Dec 11 2009 by Craig Robertson Dumfries Standard Friday For a man who turned 50 last year, Paul Weller’s energy is relentless. He could be forgiven for being happy to play out those old hits of the Jam, take the cash and go. But, if his Sands Centre gig last Thursday is anything to go buy, Weller still sounds as fresh and as current as he ever has. He stormed through a set of more than two hours which included two encores, displaying an energy and enthusiasm often lacking in artists half his age. Affectionately known as the Modfather and regarded as someone who has influenced many of today’s bands, Weller has an impressive back catalogue which stretches back to his time in the 70s with the Jam, into the 80s with the Style Council and through his solo career of the last 20 years. So there was a lot to choose from for the set-list of his winter tour. Opener, Peacock Suit, From the Floorboards Up, Broken Stones from his solo career were all highli

Paul Weller - Venue Cymru, Llandudno - Review!

Review: Paul Weller at Venue Cymru, Llandudno Dec 9 2009 THE majority may have left their scooters at home because of the rain but the crowd were still unmistakable as followers of Paul Weller. Mainly blokes, mainly smartly dressed mods - and mostly waiting for the old stuff to be played at Weller’s gig at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru on Monday December 7. The Modfather strode on the stage and launched into a set that was a mix of new, recently released and old favourites. Alongside him was guitar stalwart Steve Cradock who showed his usual deft, intricate handling of the instrument throughout the set. On bass was Andy Lewis, who doubles up as bassist for Spearmint, plus Andy Crofts (of The Moons/The On Offs) on keys and Steve Pilgrim of The Stands on drums. It got off to a slow start with a light show that initially seemed little more than random flashes. It took until several tracks in, with Porcelain Gods, that the light show kicked in properly – with colours fading in and out,

Paul Weller - Guildhall, Portsmouth - Two Reviews!

REVIEW: Paul Weller, Guildhall, Portsmouth Published Date: 09 December 2009 Weller was at his powerful best with a sizzling two-hour set on a rainy night in Portsmouth. Always refusing to be captive to his past, the Modfather focused heavily on his most recent album, with nine numbers from 22 Dreams. They're terrific songs, soon to be live classics, but it did mean some great albums (Wild Wood, Illumination etc) were left out or barely touched. But given the great man's vast back catalogue, it would be difficult to please everyone 100 per cent. The gorgeous You Do Something To Me was there, as was the brilliant Broken Stones, plus a blast from the Style Council days with Shout From The Top, all superbly done. Also thrown in were three or four teasers from a new album out next spring - tracks which suggest that the hot vein of form he hit with 22 Dreams continues unchecked. Porcelain Gods was given epic treatment, and All I Wanna Do and One Bright Star were the pick of
