Paul Weller — Sands Centre, Carlisle - Review!

Paul Weller at the Sands Centre
Dec 11 2009 by Craig Robertson
Dumfries Standard Friday

For a man who turned 50 last year, Paul Weller’s energy is relentless. He could be forgiven for being happy to play out those old hits of the Jam, take the cash and go.

But, if his Sands Centre gig last Thursday is anything to go buy, Weller still sounds as fresh and as current as he ever has. He stormed through a set of more than two hours which included two encores, displaying an energy and enthusiasm often lacking in artists half his age.

Affectionately known as the Modfather and regarded as someone who has influenced many of today’s bands, Weller has an impressive back catalogue which stretches back to his time in the 70s with the Jam, into the 80s with the Style Council and through his solo career of the last 20 years. So there was a lot to choose from for the set-list of his winter tour.

Opener, Peacock Suit, From the Floorboards Up, Broken Stones from his solo career were all highlights early on in the set. Jam classic Pretty Green was also given rare outing which was accompanied with Start! from those early days.

The first encore saw Weller and band play a three-song acoustic set featuring the classic Wild Wood before returning again with another three songs.

22 Dreams, the title track from his 2008 album, The Changingman and another Jam classic A Town Called Malice rounded off the night.

There was a notable omission of songs such as That’s Entertainment and Going Underground, but surely Weller will be forgiven for the absence by 3,000 or so Carlisle fans.

Paul Weller - Venue Cymru, Llandudno - Review!

Review: Paul Weller at Venue Cymru, Llandudno
Dec 9 2009

THE majority may have left their scooters at home because of the rain but the crowd were still unmistakable as followers of Paul Weller. Mainly blokes, mainly smartly dressed mods - and mostly waiting for the old stuff to be played at Weller’s gig at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru on Monday December 7.

The Modfather strode on the stage and launched into a set that was a mix of new, recently released and old favourites. Alongside him was guitar stalwart Steve Cradock who showed his usual deft, intricate handling of the instrument throughout the set.

On bass was Andy Lewis, who doubles up as bassist for Spearmint, plus Andy Crofts (of The Moons/The On Offs) on keys and Steve Pilgrim of The Stands on drums.

It got off to a slow start with a light show that initially seemed little more than random flashes. It took until several tracks in, with Porcelain Gods, that the light show kicked in properly – with colours fading in and out, spotlights picking out the players - and the set began to feel like that of a rock king.

The sound mix, at first a jangly and spiky with whistling top notes - though I may been standing in an acoustically bad reception area - also settled down with more bass filling in to create a smoother sound as the set progressed.

The crowd is used to being told to listen to their hero's new music, and they did, politely, as he rolled out some recently penned tracks – such as Fast Cars, Slow Traffic, with minimal back-chat to the audience. After all, if Weller wrote it and wants to perform it, then it’s worth a listen.

But they were hungry for the old stuff, and so the dancing and pogoing (well, a few minutes worth, we’re all a bit older now) was kept for the Jam classics such as Strange Town, Pretty Green and Start!

Slower tracks like You Do Something To Me were as good as they can ever be, with Cradock’s guitar melancholic enough to melt the toughest mod-boy’s heart. And Weller proved that his years with the Style Council, often air-brushed out by some fans, has a musical legacy, such as Shout To The Top.

He mixed rocking with melodic, playing much of latest album 22 Dreams, and switching from guitar to keyboards. After a break, the band settled down to an acoustic set complete with cello. Steve Pilgrim - who’d earlier given a credible thrash-drum - came out from behind his stands and cymbals to pick up a guitar.

He joined Weller and Cradock in Wild Wood, taking over part of the vocals and guitar. Weller has backed Pilgrim's recent releases and allowing somebody to play and sing on a key track is a sign of his true support. And Pilgrim did great job of it, with his voice and playing style bringing a new level to this multi-layered piece.

Then the Modfather left Pilgrim to his own devices ("he just wants a break," laughed the Scouser, whom Weller had said was shy) for a beautiful, aching track of his own – his voice is clear and light, similar to a young Art Garfunkel (stop spluttering, it’s hip to like Garfunkel again thanks to his walk-ons with Flight of the Conchords).

Then Weller was back, the set moved back to full rock, the mood picked up and the crowd were steaming. One encore saw Weller and the lads finishing with Whirlpool from Stanley Road, and part of the crowd left to head home.

Then those hanging on, hoping for a little more, were rewarded with the band striding back on to complete the set with a storming Changing Man.

Paul Weller - Guildhall, Portsmouth - Two Reviews!

REVIEW: Paul Weller, Guildhall, Portsmouth
Published Date: 09 December 2009

Weller was at his powerful best with a sizzling two-hour set on a rainy night in Portsmouth.

Always refusing to be captive to his past, the Modfather focused heavily on his most recent album, with nine numbers from 22 Dreams. They're terrific songs, soon to be live classics, but it did mean some great albums (Wild Wood, Illumination etc) were left out or barely touched.

But given the great man's vast back catalogue, it would be difficult to please everyone 100 per cent. The gorgeous You Do Something To Me was there, as was the brilliant Broken Stones, plus a blast from the Style Council days with Shout From The Top, all superbly done. Also thrown in were three or four teasers from a new album out next spring - tracks which suggest that the hot vein of form he hit with 22 Dreams continues unchecked.

Porcelain Gods was given epic treatment, and All I Wanna Do and One Bright Star were the pick of the 22 Dreams tracks - all delivered with characteristic Weller style and swagger.

But predictably, as ever, it was the Jam that was the icing on the cake. It was a great shame that Weller didn't finish off, as he so often does, with Town Called Malice, but maybe that's being greedy. Pretty Green brought back those heady Jam days, and Strange Town and Start were crackers, just as they always have been.

Put it altogether (even without the tracks personal choice might have demanded - Sunflower, Hung Up, The Changingman etc), and it all underlined what a towering figure Weller has been for the past 30 and more years. He's been the soundtrack to our lives - and boy, has he enriched them.

Paul Weller
Portsmouth Guildhall

What a legend Paul Weller is, eh? A Town Called Malice, Going Underground, That's Entertainment, Wild Wood, The Changingman... All stone cold classics, some of which defined a generation for many. And all songs which you won't hear if you go to see Paul Weller live.

It was a real coup for the Guildhall to get Weller, a huge influence on British rock and basking in the critical praise lavished on his latest album, 22 Dreams. And in the audience were two types of fan - those who had followed every step of his solo career and those hoping to celebrate the Modfather's glorious past. The former would have been satisfied, the latter fairly bored.

Peacock Suit was a great opener, proving that at 51 Weller still has the attitude and swagger that made him a Britpop talisman. He was in fine voice, the distinctive growl as powerful as ever, and a force to be reckoned with when at the front of the stage showing off.

But a decision to spend a good portion of the gig behind a piano with only the top of his head visible was an odd one, even if it did produce You Do Something To Me, a highlight of the night.

Hopes of a nostalgic encore were dashed when Weller appeared for an interminable acoustic section.

The big hits never came and although that didn't seem to matter to those who stood for an ovation, it did to many bemused-looking fans and to those who left before the end.

Weller's a legend, no doubt. It's just a shame that he can't embrace his past.
