Paul Weller In Brisbane - A Short Review!

Paul Weller Overcomes Illness To Wow Tivoli Audience! By Noel Mengel (Courier Mail) August 26, 2008 12:00am Paul Weller prefers to be on the move with his music and to look forward to the next stage of his career rather than go over old ground. There was plenty of room for both in last night's blazing show at Brisbane's The Tivoli. Shout To The Top, Changing Man, Eton Rifles, That's Entertainment, Wild Wood - songs like these, which are some of the pick of the crop from his years with The Jam, The Style Council and his solo career - were featured The lengthy set also included songs from Weller's excellent new album, 22 Dreams, ranging from soul ballad Invincible to the rollicking Sea Spray, which was welcomed as if it were an old favourite. The two-day delay in the show only seemed to make the crowd more hungry for it all, and at 50 Weller seems as hungry as ever to create music that's as powerful as the former glories. Weller's weekend concerts were postponed b...

Olympic Cyclist Bradley Wiggins Listens To Paul Weller's Music!

Beijing Olympics: Profile of Olympic cycling gold winner Bradley Wiggins Bradley Wiggins is in many respects the rock star of British cycling, bursting into the national consciousness in Athens where he won gold, silver and bronze medals. By Peter Foster in Beijing Last Updated: 3:11PM BST 18 Aug 2008 The 28-year-old Londoner is known for his love of punk-rock and specifically Paul Weller which he plays at full volume on his ipod before races, along with tracks from the Jam and the Who according to his wife, Cath. "He loves everything about the mods," she said, "he even has a classic mod scooter and the hairdo to match. He was forced to shave it off before the games because it was too hot for training. He was devastated!" The son of a professional cyclist, Gary Wiggins, Brad was born in Ghent, Belgian but grew up in London quickly following in his estranged father's tracks, racing in the Herne Hill Velodrome in south London from the age of 12. Wiggins says that ...

Review Of Paul Weller Gig In Melbourne, Saturday 8/16/08!

Paul Weller Drops In After 23 Years! by Paul Cashmere - August 18 2008 photo by Ros O'Gorman I have never heard so many English accents at an Aussie gig as I did on Saturday night before the Paul Weller show. We aren`t talking local Melbourne based fans either. One guy told us he had flown from Perth just to be there. Being in the audience for The Modfather was just part of the appeal. Seeing Paul Weller play at a 2000 capacity venue sealed the night for the English fans that would expect to see him in arena shows back home. Then again, Paul Weller is not that well known as a solo act here. While he logged up more than half a dozen hits with the Style Council and was at the forefront of punk with The Jam, his 9 solo albums never made an impact in Australia despite all being Top 10 hits back home. “Sorry it has taken me 23 years to come back,” Weller said as he belted into the first song `Peacock Suit`. The fans didn`t mind but Karma decided to punish him halfway through the show wh...

The Modfather Passes The Test Of Time! Review Of Gig On Friday 08/15/08 Adelaide, AUS Thebarton Theatre

Still rocking ... Paul Weller performs at Thebarton Theatre. PICTURE: JO-ANNA ROBINSON SAM KELTON, MUSIC WRITER August 16, 2008 12:30am Adelaide Now He's known as "The Modfather" – and last night Adelaide was treated to a lesson in culture from the man who started it all, Mr Paul Weller. In the dimly lit Thebarton Theatre, a now not so "modern con" looked and played as youthfully as ever with a near capacity crowd lapping up every soulfull note. The former Jam front man belted out early numbers such as "All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)" and "Out Of The Sinking". He had the mature crowd in a daze, and let's face it – Weller could have played Andre Rieu covers for an hour and a half and still engaged the audience. "Push It Along" was an early indicator of the crowd's restrained joy. People from all walks of life – from former mods sitting comfortable up the back, to the new found fans with skinny stove pipe jeans both nodding a...

22 Dreams Review From The New Zealand Herald!

Paul Weller 22 Dreams Rating: * * * * * As he hits his 50th year with eight solo albums already under his belt, as well as a further dozen in his time as the frontman of The Jam and Style Council, Paul Weller could be excused for taking it easy. After all, he'll forever remembered as the guy who swung from the anger of Eton Rifles to the languor of Long Hot Summer within a few confusing years. His solo albums - save for Wild Wood and Stanley Road - have become increasingly interchangeable. Solid efforts but hard to take to heart, even if you're a long-time follower of Britrock's modfather. But then along comes 22 Dreams. If the only surprise with past Weller solo albums was which one of him was going to turn up first or most - folkWeller, soulWeller, or rockWeller - then this one confounds expectations. They all front up but so do a couple of other Wellerfellas, on a free-ranging double-album of multiple genres and personalities. But somehow - though sheer energy and som...

Paul Weller - Daring To Dream - Interview & Profile From WaToday.com - Australia

Daring To Dream Paul Weller is at it again, refusing to be buttonholed into one style of music, reports Kylie Northover. From WaToday.com - Australia Paul Weller has no interest in nostalgia. The musician dubbed the "Modfather" - he led Britain's Mod revival scene as an angry young man in the late 1970s and early '80s as leader of the Jam, continued his success with mid-'80s pop-soul outfit the Style Council and then as a solo performer in the '90s - has outlasted many of his peers. Last month he released his ninth solo album, 22 Dreams, which sees him once again branching into new territory - or many territories, to be precise. An eclectic "double album" - yes, the concept still exists in the CD era - 22 Dreams runs the gamut of musical genres from electronica, instrumental jazz, Krautrock and even a daring/ill advised (it's a fine line) spoken-word track. Apart from one review in New York's Village Voice last week, which said the album was ...

A Few Words From Paolo Hewitt On Paul Weller!

Paul Weller - Still Living The Dream From The Shropshire Star Rock legend Paul Weller plays live at the Birmingham NEC on November 21. Having first appeared on the music scene with The Jam in the late 1970s, the singer-songwriter enjoyed a run of number ones until the band split in 1982, followed by a new direction with the soulful Style Council then a fresh career as a solo artist. Now 50, his ninth studio album 22 Dreams has earned him some of the best reviews of his career, with critics praising the mixture of styles - both the Observer and Independent gave it five stars. But the Woking-born singer remains something of an enigma, who can fluctuate between enthusiastic music fan to grumpy old man in interviews and public appearances. One man who knows him better than most is author Paolo Hewitt, who was friends with Weller for 30 years. His book The Changing Man, a warts and all biography of the singer, was published in paperback last month. Hewitt, who grew up in Woking and was with...

Paul Weller Feature From The Daily Mail!

There's life in the old mod yet: At 50 Paul Weller's still chasing his dreams... By Adrian Thrills The Daily Mail Paul Weller has always been a restless soul. When he disbanded The Jam in 1982, even his dad thought he'd taken leave of his senses. And while most of his original peers now make a living by trading on past glories, he is generally reluctant to play old hits. Even when he was garlanded with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Brits in 2006, he cut an incongruous figure. As pop's bright young things swanned around with their entourages, he could be found strolling about backstage with his children, itching to get on stage before heading home. If anything, that Brit Award seems to have spurred him to strive even harder, and he marked his recent 50th birthday by topping the charts with 22 Dreams, the most diverse album of his career. 'I didn't want to become one of those people whose best work is behind them once they get t...

All Weller And Good For The Modfather!

All Weller And Good From The Modfather Aug 1 2008 By Andy Welsh (Birmingham Mail.net) THOSE of a certain age would have first clapped eyes on Paul Weller performing debut single In The City on Top Of The Pops, aged just 18. That was 1977, and punk was in full swing. Noisy, skinny youths were everywhere, but there was something special about this particular angry young man. Weller had more to say than merely taking a swipe at the Monarchy, as the Sex Pistols did that same year, and The Jam's songs would go on to tackle small-town mentalities, the mundanity of nine-to-five jobs and various other universal themes of love and life. Wrapped in timeless pop melodies and an energetic mass of guitar, bass and drums, Weller's songs came from the suburbs south of London but spoke to the every man all over the country - so much so that by the time he controversially disbanded The Jam at the height of their fame in 1982, they'd become one of the biggest-selling and passionately support...

Paul Weller Interview From Spinner.com!

Paul Weller Waxes Eclectic About His Career and New Album By Steve Baltin (Spinner.com) At 50, and more than three decades since the Jam left a legacy that has been hailed by every U.K. band from Oasis to Morrissey, Paul Weller has reached music icon status. But like so many of his peers in recent years, Weller remains as vital musically as he is quotable in conversation, displaying the same youthful bravado that marked his "Modfather" heyday. He proudly (yet cryptically) calls his new album of 21 songs '22 Dreams,' his most ambitious yet. Ranging from gorgeous ballads to Style Council infused soul to spoken word, the record covers all aspects of Weller's career. He spoke to Spinner about the new album, why he's proud of his kids' musical tastes and why his annual drunken pilgrimage through his musical past is more than enough nostalgia for him. You've said you view this record as a full song cycle. At what point did you know it was going to take that ...
