Paul Weller Talks With Clint Boon On XFM Radio!

So Paul Weller missed out on this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize with his album 'Wake Up The Nation', but he's not bitter. Although here, he tells Clint Boon about what he thinks about The xx, what it's like to stay passionate about new music and a whole myriad of topics.

Paul Weller Talks With XFM After The Mercury Award Event!

Paul Weller has revealed that he “couldn't wait to get home” after he failed to win the Mercury Prize last week.

The former Jam star's recent album 'Wake Up The Nation' was the bookies' favourite to win heading into the ceremony in London last week, but eventually lost out to The xx.

In an interview with XFM, Weller revealed that he went home straight after the announcement was made so he could watch TV.

“I'd been there all day, being old and miserable, I couldn't wait to get home,” he said. “I thought, I've had enough of this. I wasn't doing my upset diva bit, I just wanted to go home and watch telly."

Weller also admitted that he found it “hard to get excited” about the down-tempo sound of The xx's self-titled winning album.

As previously reported on Gigwise, sales of 'xx' rocket last weekend's following the band's win.

“It's not really my sort of thing. I'm not putting them down, just because they beat me,” he added.
As previously reported on Gigwise, sales of 'xx' rocketed following the band's win. The album is currently number three on the UK album chart.

Erland & The Carnival Set To Open For Paul Weller In New York!

INTRODUCING ERLAND & THE CARNIVAL

DEBUT NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE, THE “TROUBLE IN MIND” EP, OUT OCTOBER 19TH ON YEP ROC/FULL TIME HOBBY

ERLAND & THE CARNIVAL TO PLAY SELECT DATES IN NEW YORK THIS FALL

They’ve made themselves known in the UK with glowing reviews of their astonishing debut in Mojo, Uncut, NME, The Guardian and more, plus raves about their live show as well; now the five-piece known as Erland & The Carnival are ready to make their mark on the US. Guitarist, singer and former resident of remote Orkney, Scotland Erland Cooper, guitarist Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, The Bad & The Queen) and drummer David Nock (The Orb, Paul McCartney’s The Fireman) will digitally release their US debut, the “Trouble In Mind” EP, October 19th on Yep Roc/Full Time Hobby. Together, they produce a sound described by Tong as, “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek.” In other words: folk-tinged, psyched up, fuzzed-out brilliance. It’s a sound that has immediate appeal, despite the depth of its content.

In the grand folk tradition, The Carnival see literary and musical source material as something to be adapted, tinkered with, updated and blown apart. This new EP finds the band doing so with intelligence and grace. Take “Love Is A Killing Thing” for instance – it’s based on a traditional folk song collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams, but updated with a new bridge and a chorus from a Seeger/MacColl song. “Trouble in Mind” was loosely started as a blues track collected by Alan Lomax, though the shape of the finished song is unrecognizable from its source. The band added their own melody and lyrics, and even borrowed words from Bruce Springsteen’s “My Fathers House”, and inspiration from the Daphne Du Maurier book/Alfred Hitchcock film, Rebecca.

Not just lauded for their brilliance on record, Erland & The Carnival put on a striking live show, and they’ll be treating New Yorkers to a taste of this in November. Get a sneak peek here!

Paul Weller Covers The Zombies' "Time Of The Season!"

Performed On The Simon Mayo Show - BBC Radio 2 - September 8, 2010

The Jam's Sound Affects (Deluxe Edition) Details Announced!

Released November 1, 2010:

Tellingly, when Weller came to record 2010’s Wake Up The Nation, it was Sound Affects that his collaborator and producer Simon Dine held up as a model. “He referenced it right at the start,” says Weller. “That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged.”

Sound Affects was originally released in November 1980 at a time when The Jam was considered the biggest band in Britain. The album followed the band’s first number one single – Going Underground and features the group’s second UK number one single, Start! – a track built around almost exact copies of the bass-line and guitar solos from The Beatles’ Taxman (at the time Weller considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver!).

It includes many of the band’s classic songs - That’s Entertainment (written in a caravan in Selsey, after the pub), never released as a single in UK, the German import was a UK hit (subsequently covered by Morrissey), the political Man in the Corner Shop, Pretty Green (now inspiration for Liam Gallagher’s clothing range!), the pure-pop of Boy About Town and Dream Time.

It’s regarded by critics and fans (as well as Weller) as their most adventurous and experimental collection of material, drawing musical influences from the ‘post-punk’ groups of the late-70s - Wire, Gang Of Four and Joy Division as well as neo-psychedelic touches from The Beatles and The Zombies etc.

The distinctive cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various BBC sound effects records of the 1970s, incorporating ‘pop-art’ imagery.

• 30th anniversary 2-disc, ‘Deluxe’ edition of the classic Jam album.

• Digitally re-mastered – 22 bonus tracks, demos, b-sides and alternative versions.

• 24-page booklet with extensive new sleevenotes by Guardian writer John Harris, a brand new interview with Paul Weller, rare photos and period memorabilia.

• The bonus material includes 8 previously unreleased tracks – demos of Pretty Green and Start!, alternate versions of Set The House Ablaze and Monday and a cover of Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset, and two instrumental demos.

A Review Of Paul Weller's Gig At The Belsonic Festival!

Paul Weller
Belsonic Festival, Custom House Square, Belfast

Added: 3 Sep 2010 // Gig date: 27 Aug 2010
reviewer: Francis Higney

From MusicNews.com

The vanguard of the punk rock movement took time out of their busy schedules to visit Belfast during its darkest times of the 1970s. Bands like the Damned, Clash, Siouxise and the Banshees and Penetration brought a glamour fired in the London furnaces of the Lyceum, Roxy and the Rainbow to the Ulster Hall and the Pound to sate a musically and culturally starved youth. The flag bearers that were the Sex Pistols had all but imploded by the time punk had gripped the province and so were not missed. The Jam were. They became the biggest band to emerge from the new wave and their natty dress sense and sixties influences saw them embraced by the revitalised mod movement.

Belfast still has a long running love affair with punk and even today has a thriving mod scene which should have ensured a sell-outt gig for former Jam frontman Paul Weller at this open air Belfast gig – part of the Belsonic festival that had already seen Kasabian and Florence and the Machine play in the heart of the city. But on a dank drizzle-threatened evening the gig was at best three quarters full. Sited near the quayside, the Custom House Square is a natural amphitheatre bordered on three sides by what were formally yuppie apartments but are now millstones for the once monied. Britain's king of soul also came by royal appointment if the huge neon Royal Mail sign that hung in the still night air like a halo was anything to go by. But there was a disjoint between the ruler and his subjects as his latest edicts contained on 'Wake up the Nation' patently failed to do just that. It was not until the evening was electrified by Changing Man that the crowd seemed to shake out of their slumber. It was a shame that the night continued to progress in a similar matter with the most rapturous reception given to the old Jam and Style Council songs that were dusted off including Pretty Green, Start and Shout to the Top. For his latest album contains some of the most adventurous and experimental songs gathered together on one album for some time.

But this audience could not see the wonder in the Trees, possibly the weirdest thing Weller's ever penned and which left this time-trapped audience dumbfounded. Similarly One Bright Star and 7 & 3 Is the Striker's Name came and went almost unnoticed.

Some of the crowd perked up, however, with the arrival onstage of R&B stalwart Wilko Johnston. The former Feelgoods guitarist was coincidentally playing at a nearby venue as part of the Belfast Blues Festival and was co-opted onstage for a couple of numbers. But the majority of the crowd were here to hear the hits. Once these were delivered they headed off happy into the thickening Irish mist.
